How to Prepare for a Newborn Photo Session in Melbourne

How to Prepare for a Newborn Photo Session in Melbourne

The first weeks with a baby pass in a blur, and a newborn photography session in Melbourne is one way to slow them down. A little preparation helps the session feel calm for you and for your baby.

This guide is general, not medical advice. Always follow your doctor, midwife or maternal and child health nurse on anything to do with your baby’s care, feeding, sleep and health.

When to book

Many photographers recommend a newborn session within roughly the first two weeks. Newborns tend to sleep more deeply and curl up easily at this age. If you are past that, do not worry. Lovely photos are still possible, so ask what your photographer suggests.

Many parents book before the baby arrives and then confirm the exact date once the baby is born. That way you are not organising anything while you are tired and busy.

Warmth, feeding and comfort come first

Babies are happiest when they are warm, fed and settled. A good session moves at the baby’s pace, with no rush.

  • Expect the room to be warmer than usual. Wear layers so you stay comfortable.
  • Feed your baby just before the session starts, if that suits your routine.
  • Plan for breaks for feeds, changes and cuddles. These are part of the session, not interruptions.
  • Bring everything you need: nappies, wipes, spare clothes, dummy if you use one, and your usual feeding items.
  • If your baby is unsettled, it is fine to stop and try again later.

What baby should wear

Often the simplest option is the best. Many parents bring a few soft, easy outfits, or choose to photograph baby in a simple wrap or nappy only, depending on comfort and warmth.

  • Choose soft, loose, easy-to-change clothes with no tight bands.
  • Bring a hat or bonnet if you like one.
  • Avoid anything scratchy or stiff.
  • Take off tight clothing early so there are no marks on baby’s skin.

What parents and siblings can wear

Solid colours and soft textures usually look timeless. Neutral or earthy shades, such as cream, white, tan, soft blue or blush, tend to sit well with a newborn’s skin.

  • Avoid big logos and loud patterns.
  • Wear something comfortable that you can move and feed in.
  • Coordinate colours without matching exactly.
  • Bring a second option, in case of spills.

Props, setups and safety

Soft wraps, baskets, flowers and simple setups can make beautiful photos. Your baby’s safety and comfort matter more than any look. Ask your photographer how they handle posing, how they support baby, and what they do if your baby is not happy. A baby should always be supported, and any setup should be safe.

It is also fine to say no to anything you are not comfortable with. If you want something simple, such as baby in a parent’s arms, that is just as lovely.

Studio or at home?

Both can work well. A studio session is a neat, controlled setting. A session at home is familiar and relaxed, and you do not have to travel with a newborn. I can photograph at my Beaconsfield studio or at your home, so just let me know what suits you.

Include the whole family

A newborn session is not only about baby. It is the first chapter of your family. Include parents, siblings, grandparents and even pets.

  • Parents with baby, with soft, natural light.
  • Siblings holding, kissing or sitting beside baby, with an adult close by.
  • Grandparents holding baby for a few quiet frames.
  • Details such as tiny fingers, toes and the curve of baby’s ear.

What a session feels like

A newborn session is slow by design. You will usually spend more time feeding, settling and cuddling than posing. Your photographer will work around your baby, using soft light and gentle handling, and will pause whenever baby needs you.

  1. We start with a chat about what you would love, including favourite colours and any special items.
  2. Baby is settled, fed and warm, then we begin with simple, close portraits.
  3. Parents and siblings join for family photos when baby is calm.
  4. We finish with small details, such as hands, feet and a family heirloom.

Small personal touches

Newborn photos feel even more special with something that is truly yours. You might bring a blanket someone knitted, a piece of family jewellery, a hospital bracelet, or a first outfit that was passed down. If your family has a tradition or blessing for new babies, tell your photographer so it can be part of the day.

Make it easy on yourself

  • Keep your plans for the day light. You do not need to tidy the whole house.
  • Ask a partner or relative to help with other children or pets.
  • Have a drink and a snack ready for yourself.
  • Remember that every baby is different, and a “difficult” session is just a baby being a baby.

Your quick checklist

  • Confirm the date and time, and the plan if baby is unwell.
  • Pack nappies, wipes, spare clothes, feeding items, a dummy and a blanket.
  • Choose outfits for parents and siblings.
  • Feed baby shortly before the session if that works for your routine.
  • Bring snacks and water for yourselves.
  • Let your photographer know about any health or safety concerns.
  • Relax. Babies pick up on calm.

Frequently asked questions

How soon after birth should we book?

Many photographers suggest within roughly the first two weeks, but follow your health professional’s advice and ask your photographer what they recommend.

How long does a newborn session take?

It depends on your baby. Sessions run at baby’s pace with breaks for feeding and settling, so allow plenty of time and ask your photographer for an idea.

What if my baby cries?

It happens, and it is normal. A cuddle, a feed or a short break usually helps, and we can continue when baby is ready.

Can siblings and grandparents join?

Yes. Family photos are often the ones people treasure most. Just let your photographer know who is coming.
