Learning photography or videography is easier when someone shows you how it works in the real world. At J Y Productions we share what we have learned since starting our business in 2018, photographing and filming weddings, pre-wedding shoots, maternity, newborn and family sessions, baby showers, cake smashes and events across Melbourne.

Who it is for

Our education options are for new and developing photographers and videographers. You might be just starting out with your first camera, building a portfolio, or already taking paid work and wanting to grow your confidence. Everything is shaped around where you are now and where you want to go.

What we offer

1:1 mentoring

One-on-one time with us, focused entirely on you. Mentoring sessions are tailored to your level and your goals, whether that is getting comfortable with your camera settings, learning to work with natural light, directing couples and families, or thinking through how you run your own photography business. Bring your questions and your work, and we will work through them together.

Shadowing on real shoots

There is no substitute for seeing a real shoot from start to finish. Shadowing lets you come along and watch how we plan, communicate with clients, handle changing light and keep a session relaxed. It is a practical way to understand the pace and people skills that a camera manual cannot teach. Shadowing opportunities depend on the shoot and on our clients being comfortable, so we arrange them case by case.

Editing lessons

Good editing turns a strong photo or clip into a finished piece. Our editing lessons cover how we approach culling, colour and consistency across a gallery, and how to build an efficient workflow you can repeat. Lessons are tailored to the software and skills you already have, and can be held in person at our Beaconsfield studio or online.

Workshops

Workshops are a chance to learn alongside other photographers and videographers. Topics and formats vary, and we share details when a workshop is being planned. If you would like to hear about upcoming workshops, let us know through our contact page.

Format and location

Mentoring, shadowing and editing lessons are arranged around your schedule and your level. In-person learning happens at our studio in Beaconsfield, South-East Melbourne, or on location for shadowing. Editing lessons can also be arranged online. When you enquire, tell us a little about your experience and what you hope to learn, and we will suggest the option that suits you best.

About Jay and Yesha

J Y Productions is run by Jay and Yesha, a husband-and-wife photography and videography team. We founded the business in 2018 and work from our studio in Beaconsfield. We speak English, Hindi and Gujarati, and we have spent years learning how to make people feel at ease in front of the camera. That is one of the most valuable things we can pass on.
