A maternity session is a quiet pause in a very busy time. These maternity photoshoot tips for Melbourne will help you plan something relaxed that you will be proud to look at for years.
Everything below is general guidance. Always follow the advice of your doctor or midwife, and tell your photographer about anything that affects what you can do comfortably.
The best time for a maternity shoot is 34 to 36 weeks. That is when the bump is clearly visible but you still feel like moving around.
In one of my own sessions, I photographed a couple at 34 weeks, and I often recommend the 34 to 36 week range for bump portraits. You can read it in this beach maternity story. If you are unsure, ask when you enquire and we will choose what feels right for you.
The best outfit is the one you feel comfortable and beautiful in. Fitted outfits that show the shape of your bump, or flowing gowns that move in the breeze, both work well.

The softest, warmest light comes in the hour or so before sunset, often called golden hour. Midday sun is harsher, and overcast days are soft and flattering too. In Melbourne, the weather can change quickly, so it helps to have a backup day or a studio option.
Both are lovely, and the right choice depends on your mood.
Parks, gardens, bushland and beaches give texture, colour and movement. They suit flowing dresses and relaxed, natural poses. Think about the walk from the car, the weather and how comfortable you will be standing.

A studio is calm, warm and easy to control. It suits clean, timeless portraits and is good if the weather is unpredictable or if you would prefer a private space. I can photograph at my Beaconsfield studio or choose an outdoor location with you.

Maternity portraits are not only about the bump. They are about the people who are waiting for this baby.
You do not need to know how to pose. A good photographer will guide you, and the best photos often come from movement and conversation.
It is also normal to feel a bit awkward at the start. Most people relax within the first ten minutes or so, especially when the focus is on the two of you.
Every session is a little different, but here is a general idea of how it might go.
Some parents like a short film of their session as well as photos, since it captures the movement of a breeze, a wave or a laugh. If you would like this, ask when you enquire and we can talk through how it works.
A few meaningful items can make the photos feel like yours: baby booties, an ultrasound strip, a family heirloom, a blessing or a faith element. A maternity session can also be a time to bring in your culture and heritage, like the one in this forest and temple maternity story.
You can see more sessions in the maternity gallery and learn about sessions on the maternity photography page. If you are also planning ahead for baby’s arrival, my guide to preparing for a newborn session may help.
The best time is 34 to 36 weeks. Your own comfort and your health professional’s advice come first.
Choose something comfortable that shows your bump, such as a stretchy fitted dress or a flowing gown. Bring a second option if you can.
Absolutely. Partner and family photos are some of the favourites.
We can reschedule, change location or shoot in the studio. Tell your photographer your preference when you book.
