The Best Types of Photo Locations in South-East Melbourne for Pre-Wedding and Family Shoots

One of the first things couples and families ask me is, “Where should we shoot?” The best pre-wedding photo locations in South-East Melbourne are the ones that suit your personality, your outfits and the season. Rather than a list of famous places, this guide looks at the types of locations and what to think about for each.

Melbourne and its south-east have a great mix of coastline, parks, gardens, bushland and city streets. I am based in Beaconsfield, in South-East Melbourne, and I also photograph all across Melbourne, so tell me what you love and we will find the right place together.

Beaches and coastline

Water and sky make a simple, calming backdrop. Sunrise and the hour before sunset give soft, warm light. Wind is common near the coast, so choose outfits that handle breeze, and expect to deal with sand.

  • Best for: relaxed couples, maternity, family sessions, flowing outfits.
  • Think about: wind, tides, footwear, how far you will walk on sand, and crowds on warm weekends.

Some of my past stories show this style: a pre-wedding shoot across the Bayside coastline and the city and a beach maternity session on the Mornington Peninsula.

Parks and gardens

Lawns, flower beds, tree-lined paths and ponds are some of the easiest settings to photograph. They give colour, shade and plenty of variety within a short walk.

  • Best for: pre-wedding, engagement, family and newborn siblings.
  • Think about: seasonal colour (spring blossom, summer greens, autumn leaves), busy weekend crowds, and whether the park allows professional photography.

Bushland and forest

Tall trees, filtered light and quiet paths feel private and cinematic. Bushland is wonderful for earthy, natural portraits and for traditional outfits against deep greens.

  • Best for: couples who like quiet, nature-filled portraits and for maternity.
  • Think about: uneven paths, shade and light levels, mozzies in warmer months, and weather in cooler hills.

Two of my stories were photographed in nature: a wedding with portraits under tall green trees and a maternity session in a forest arboretum in Olinda.

The city

Streets, laneways, grand buildings, bridges and skylines bring energy and style. City locations are especially popular for pre-wedding shoots, because they feel modern and a little cinematic.

  • Best for: fashion-forward couples, evening lights, and bold outfits.
  • Think about: crowds, traffic, parking costs and time, and any rules for professional photography.

Mix two location types

You do not have to choose only one. A natural start, such as a beach or park, followed by a city stop, is a popular combination. Plan travel time between locations and keep the number of stops realistic.

Match the location to the occasion

  • Pre-wedding or engagement: pick a place that feels like you as a couple, with room for two outfits and some walking.
  • Maternity: keep walking distance short, look for somewhere to sit, and consider soft evening light.
  • Newborn and young children: choose somewhere calm, close to the car, with flat paths and shade.
  • Extended family: choose a spacious lawn or garden with room for group photos.

Comfort and practical details

A beautiful backdrop is not much good if you are uncomfortable. Think about heels on gravel or sand, long dresses on wet grass, strollers on bumpy paths and elders who may need a seat. Bring water, a light jacket, a towel or blanket, and wet wipes. A short walk to a great spot is better than a long walk to a perfect one.

Timing: season and light

  • Golden hour: roughly the hour before sunset gives the warmest, softest light. Sunset times change through the year, so check the time for your date.
  • Season: spring flowers, summer long days, autumn colour and winter moodiness all offer something. Choose the season that suits your story.
  • Weather: Melbourne weather can change in a day. Have a backup date.
  • Time of week: weekdays and early mornings are usually quieter.

Permits, rules and parking

Some parks, gardens and public places have rules about professional photography. Others may need a permit or booking, especially for larger groups or wedding-style setups. Councils and park managers decide this, so it is worth checking in advance rather than assuming.

  • Ask the local council or the land manager whether a permit is needed.
  • Check rules for props, drones and large groups.
  • Find out where to park and how far you will walk. Keep it short if you are pregnant, with young children or in formal clothes.
  • Check for toilets and shade, especially for family shoots.

Family shoots: keep it easy

For families, easy access matters most. Choose a place with flat paths, space to run and somewhere to sit. Time the session around naps and meals, and keep it short so everyone stays happy. Lawns, gardens and quiet beaches work well.
